FAQs

Expanse Education Support Team

About the Opportunity

Do I need hospital experience for this role?

Not necessarily. We are looking for a variety of experience levels. We should talk if any of these situations might describe your career aspirations...

  • You want to work in healthcare, but you don’t want to be a nurse or care provider (maybe you’re a bit squeamish with blood).
  • You have worked in healthcare, but you are feeling burned out working in patient care.
  • You are an experienced MEDITECH consultant, but are looking for an organization that can leverage your skillsets for years to come.
  • You never really considered healthcare, but you like the idea of helping people.
  • One thing is for sure: we are looking for people who want to help people.
Why is this a great job opportunity?
  • Onboard at a top performing company in healthcare.  HCA Healthcare is installing a new electronic health record in more than 180 hospitals over the next four years. This massive modernization effort for one of the largest healthcare companies in the US is an opportunity to work with great minds, share a common goal, and learn why HCA is a top performing healthcare provider.  No other organization offers a MEDITECH opportunity as transformative and long-lasting as this one.
  • Be a part of a massive transformation effort for patients nationwide. This is your chance to apply for more than a job. Discover more than a career. This is your opportunity to join a team on a mission to improve healthcare everywhere.
  • Influence the speed and efficiency of transforming healthcare. Learn how installing MEDITECH Expanse in a hospital will mean leaving your imprint as you connect healthcare providers with next generation EHR technology.
  • Start from a respected position and build on that foundation. Some of HCA Healthcare’s most successful IT professionals started their leadership, engineering, strategy, and education careers in roles very similar to those on the Expanse Education Support Team (EEST). They brought knowledge from business, MIS, communication and more to this work and went on to be senior leaders and chief contributors inside HCA Healthcare and its subsidiary companies. Their project was to install an earlier generation of MEDITECH EHR systems that are being replaced enterprise wide.
  • Align with unparalleled mentors and industry understanding. The greatest minds in healthcare have helped HCA Healthcare and its subsidiaries achieve their positions as industry leaders. Those great minds could become your mentors, LinkedIn connections, and examples to follow. No other organization offers anything similar.
  • Work with interesting people who have signed up for this opportunity. We find the candidates who pursue this opportunity are smart, adventurous, compassionate, ambitious, and fun – just the type of colleagues most people want to work with.
Do I need to be tech savvy for this role?
We are looking for people who like helping friends and family learn new apps. If you are your network’s go to for learning the latest update’s new enhancements, that’s a good sign. If you love to learn and solve problems, are curious, a quick learner, and also patient with people who are learning – we should talk.

What will the work be like?

You’ll earn the title “road warrior”. We’re not going to sugar coat it. The hours will be long and tedious. It will feel like you are running a marathon, because you are. But, at the finish line will be thanks and gratitude from doctors and nurses. They will thank you because the technology you are going to make happen for them will change how they deliver care. You will get addicted to the adrenaline rush of “go-live” and you will remember how much of a difference you made in the lives of others forever.

Is this job right for me?

Answer these questions to help you decide.

  • Do you want the work you do to make a difference and help people?
  • Do you enjoy travel and have an adventurous and curious mindset?
  • Would you like to start a career in healthcare IT working with a Fortune 100 company?
  • Would you be interested in working in different locations in the US for weeks at a time?
  • Would an hourly wage well over what most lawyers in the United States make ($48 per ZipRecruiter) help you balance the travel time with off time?
  • Are you patient when you help your friends and family use their streaming services, cell phone, computers, or tablets?
  • Do your friends describe you as organized, high achieving, a problem-solver?

If you answered Yes to five or more of these questions, a position on the MEDITECH Expanse implementation team could be right for you.

Benefits

What are the benefits?

  • On-the-job training program and continual professional development programs
  • Connection with a Fortune 100 (our parent company HCA Healthcare) and associated career opportunities
  • Clinical and operations knowledge that qualifies you for professional advancement

Expectations and Career Path

What is the career path?
You will gain expertise and real-world experience that cannot be replicated in any other company. Implementing MEDITECH Expanse for HCA Healthcare will prepare you for positions at HCA Healthcare, CereCore, healthcare facilities, and related technology services firms.
What will the work life balance be like?

This job is not a typical 8am-5pm, 40 hour a week job role. You should anticipate working after hours, weekends and 10-12 hour shifts. If you enjoy traveling, meeting new people and changing your environment frequently, this role could be a great fit for you.

Once you wrap up an implementation project at a care location, you will take some time off to recharge and rest. Then, you’ll be assigned another implementation in a different location, and you’ll be off to the races again.

These implementation projects take place in some exciting cities such as Houston, Denver, Miami, and Ogden, so you’ll be in vibrant places with interesting things to do and see. A per diem and a generous compensation will help make the hard days easier and the off-time fun.

Are there certifications required?

Some job roles will require certifications; others will not. However, we do offer a comprehensive training program, which may include certifications.

Training and Professional Development

What will the 1-week intensive training program include?

You will receive a crash course in how to support MEDITECH Expanse in a hospital. You’ll learn about

  • How the system works for various users (administrative and clinical informatics to hospital department users, pharmacy, lab, nurses, providers, care navigators and so on)
  • How to provide excellent customer support
  • How to work in a healthcare setting
  • Patient safety
Will there be ongoing training that I will be required to take?

Yes. Plus, at the conclusion of each implementation there will be a deep dive into lessons learned so that with each go-live we improve, working proactively to mitigate issues, reduce downtimes, and improve user experience and adoption.

When will my first assignment start?

You'll start and finish training in July. Your first assignment will be shortly thereafter and you will get started in a few months.

Travel and Time Off

What are the travel policies?
We have specific travel policies that we will cover extensively during onboarding and training. Bottom line: Exercise good judgement and be ethical in reporting travel expenses.
How long will I be expected to travel?
You should expect to be focused on the same care location for months; of course, the timeframe can vary and depends on a variety of factors (size of the hospital, how well the project is progressing, etc.).
How often will I be able to return home?
At some points in the project, you may be required to work weekends or long hours which might make long-distance travel difficult. You should anticipate being away from home for 3-4 weeks at a time. Work with your manager as there is flexibility to request some time off.
How often will I be able to take time off?
You will need to plan vacations and time off well in advance. Of course, life happens and family emergencies are never planned and we will work with you through those rare but difficult situations
