Security and innovation are in constant conflict in healthcare. The temptation is to let one win by default. But Tommy West, Enterprise Fellow of Security Architecture at CereCore, believes the real work happens in the balance.
"Innovation without operational sustainability is just a shiny liability," West says.
Early in his career, West thought being right was the job. He has since learned that having the answer means nothing if you cannot bring people along with you. Now when the path is unclear, his first move is to lean into relationships, pull the right people into the room, and create space for honest debate.
In healthcare, the cost of getting it wrong is not a missed target. It is patient safety, regulatory exposure, or a breach that erodes years of trust overnight. The willingness to sit in that discomfort and say "I don't know yet" is what separates leaders who navigate complexity from those who just react to it.
His challenge to the next generation is simple. Do not rush past the hard work. The leaders healthcare needs most are not chasing certifications or titles. They are the ones willing to challenge the status quo because "that is how we have always done it" is the most dangerous phrase in the industry.
The scars are the credential.
